Le périple que je vous propose est tout entier dédié
à la musique anglo-américaine des années 40 jusqu'au présent
millennaire, et plus précisément à ces styles musicaux
dont nos pseudo-esthètes hexagonaux (vous savez, ceux qui monopolisent
les médias) ignorent toujours plus ou moins l'existence : Rock'n'Roll, Rockabilly, Country Boogie, Hillbilly, Western Swing, Bluegrass, Rhythm'n'Blues, Doo Wop, British Beat, Garage Rock, Surf et diverses formes de Jazz.
Cela représente une palette d'Artistes et d'Oeuvres suffisamment étoffée
pour amortir vos forfaits Internet !
L'éclectisme est
donc ici de rigueur, mais pas au détriment du discernement. Au-delà
des goûts et préférences bien légitimes de chacun,
il est nécessaire de pouvoir mettre en évidence un fil conducteur
de sa passion artistique sous peine de sombrer dans un brassage stérile.
Pour ma part, la découverte de Gene Vincent, Eddie Cochran, Buddy Holly, Bill Haley, Cliff Richard & The Shadows, The Beatles et quelques autres au milieu
des sixties a bouleversé mon existence dans tous ses compartiments :
depuis lors, je vis ma Passion .... Et je me suis toujours senti investi d'une mission, celle de faire connaître cette musique à un maximum de monde. Cela a culminé avec un show hebdomadaire sur Radio France Vaucluse (quand les émissions à thème étaient reines sur la FM), ma collaboration
à divers magazines spécialisés ('Latch
On' en particulier) et ma participation à
diverses rééditions discographiques chez EMI, RockStar, Bear Family et Ambiance Records.
Tout cela grâce à mes rencontres et interviews avec une pléiade d'artistes, musiciens, producteurs, musicologues divers et autres passionnés dont une liste - non exhaustive - figure plus bas.
Vous pourrez déguster
moult biographies d'artistes connus et obscurs, souvent assorties des discographies
correspondantes, le tout émaillé de photos parfois exclusives et de reproductions
de disques souvent rares. L'amour de la Musique se conjugue souvent avec le besoin
de collectionner ; je n'ai pas échappé à la règle.
Dévoreur de ce vinyle toujours bien portant, je suis
néanmoins ouvert au monde digital et chronique aussi
des CDs, des SACDs et des DVDs. Ne m'en veuillez pas : l'anglais est également
une de mes passions et presque toutes mes bios ou essais sont rédigés
dans cette langue.
Enfin,
le MP3 est évidemment présent dans mes pages, généralement en cliquant sur une des
nombreuses photos ou en cliquant sur l'électrophone qui apparaît dans la colonne de gauche. Par contre, j'ai volontairement minimisé l'intégration
de séquences animées Flash, pour des problèmes essentiellement techniques et puis parce que trop de Flash, c'est un peu comme un jambon-beurre avec trop de beurre et pas assez de jambon !

Ce site, âgé maintenant de 25 ans, est le fruit de plus
de 50 ans d'amour absolu du Rock,
de ses racines et de ses dérivés. C'est ma 'vitrine' et constitue un 'sampler' du projet
sur lequel je travaille en concomitance : la confection de plusieurs publications papier de qualité professionnelle consacrées à la Musique. Bien sûr, le rêve absolu
demeure... la création d'une maison d'éditions discographiques officielle mais je l'ai en partie comblé avec l'apparition de mon label, APCD, qui me permet de digitaliser ma collection de vinyle pour la postérité.

A young boy trying to overcome the sadness of his family life in the '60s, who comes across a bunch of rock'n'roll records that his cousin brought home and suddenly, instantly, finds his way ... That was me some 55 years ago and I still remember how music helped me shape my feelings : to make a long story short, everything I've ever done is music-oriented and music-driven.
Thus, I began buying records in the mid-60's and haven't stopped since then !! Being part of that odd but exciting international community known as The Collectors' Circle is both a blessing and a curse : you find good stuff every week, your collection grows by leaps and bounds, the cassette-tapes & CDs you use in the car are all the better for that and the many hours you spend in your music room are kinda like going to church, both in terms of rituals and communion with the Artists. But at times one can tend to worship those pieces of vinyl just a little too much ; I mean, we gotta stay clear of any kind of fetishism (as the late Frank Zappa used to say) which could only spoil the fun and joy of enjoying the work of Artists -- well-known as well as obscure -- in a real dedicated way.
My point is, they may be Artists, they're people first and foremost ; that's why I've always wanted to meet as many of them as I could in order to write about both their music and their lives -- which I've done in various publications over the years. However, with the advent of the Internet, I thought I'd better set up a web site and reach more readers at the same time. Which I did in 1998 and it proved invaluable as I managed to get in touch with more artists, musicians, producers and collectors than ever before. I'm now in the process of re-designing and rejuvenating the whole site.
Like before, I'll not only discuss the Artists and their music (sometimes including full or selected discographies), but also the formats on which it's available, the books and magazines dealing with those topics, and to make a full roundup, I'll list my favorite web sites (check out the 'Web Faves' page for that matter).
Eclecticism is a key word in my book -- but never to the detriment of discernment ; I need to feel energy, soul and commitment in what I hear. Likewise, although being a longtime Rock'n'Roll fan, I've always liked Jazz, Soul, Blues, Harmony Groups as well as Country and Bluegrass, and have always been fascinated by the interaction between all these musical styles (a case in point would be Western Swing -- one of my favorite musical areas -- which is a terrific blend of Hillbilly, Jazz, Oldtime and pure Pop).

I have reduced the use of Flash animations mainly for technical reasons. However, original music in mp3 format is still present. Obviously, these are only short musical samples which you can access by clicking either on a particular linked picture or the record player pictured on the left when it appears (here, you'll recognize the sounds which were heard over the opening page of the old site - a mix of the beginning and end of Ray Stanley & Eddie Cochran's fantastic instrumental titled 'Pushin').
Guess you have a true synthesis of my approach to the Art form I love the best ; so sit down, relax and take a trip through the past to discover (or rediscover) some great music, courtesy of timeless Artists who helped save the life of a young kid along the way ...
After losing too much time as an accountant, I decided to resign and stay home to take care of my second daughter, Nellie, who's mentally handicapped but an absolute joy to live with (and much more receptive to music than many !). Although it's a full-time job, I still find the time to write about music, maintain my web site, collect more rare records, transfer my vinyl onto CD (hence my own APCD label), do free computer maintenance work on the side and help out with pictures and info on a number of choice reissues by specialized record companies such as Bear Family.
