Click to go to the contents of www.bigvjamboree.com

This is an updated reprint of a piece I compiled in 1985 & 1986, with help from the Country Music Foundation (Nashville) and a couple of fellow collectors. It was first published in the November 1986 issue of the French mag - LATCH ON - then run by Jean-Guy Meunier.
Also, many thanks to
Steve Wisner, Walt Rogers, Scott Adamson and the late Harry Shields.

* CO 65581 to 65592 : November 15, 1960.

Nigel Burlinson has kindly given me the explanation for that 'RHCO' prefix :
R=Radio Recorders, H= Hollywood, CO=Columbia.

The Mac Gregor stuff dates back probably to 1960 or 1961 (maybe earlier than that). Joe played most instruments, using overdubbing extensively.
The Capitol sides were recorded around 1962 and 1963 (producer : Ken Nelson).
Joe also appears on the LP, 'Anthology Of The Banjo' (Everest/Tradition 2077), circa 1963 ; he does 'Joe's Breakdown' and 'Banjo Workout'.
Most of the above sessions were done in Hollywood (Radio Recorders, etc), although some were cut in Nashville (like those for the Rose Lee Maphis LP).
After Capitol, Joe was signed to Starday Records.
The Starday sides are all from the 1964-1966 period ; they were cut in Nashville at the Starday Sound Studios, produced by Tommy Hill and engineered by Jack Linneman.
From the early '60s on, most Starday recordings were cut in true Stereo (2 or 3-track) and were then mixed down to Mono. While the singles were released in Mono, some albums were released in Stereo though, or rereleased that way. Such was the case of SLP 306 and SLP 357 (despite a couple of songs in annoying rechanneled stereo, but these are mostly '50s cuts) and Joe's numbers are gloriously sounding !! There was a Little LP version of SLP 357 in Stereo but Joe wasn't featured (only Red Sovine [2 cuts including the rocking 'Truck Driving Son Of A Gun'], Slim Jacobs [the hilarious 'That's Truck Drivin'], Johnny Bond and Minnie Pearl [whose 'Answer To Giddy-Up, Go' wasn't on the 12" album] appeared).
The budget Nashville label was an offshoot of Starday.

The Mosrite outings (produced by Semie & Audy Moseley) are late '60s recordings.
The first Chart album was released in 1971.
The Outreach album is a real rarity. Probably cut in Nashville, it was released in 1975. The musicians listed are : Ron Oates (piano), Harold Rugg (steel), Joe Zinkan (bass) & William Ackerman (drums) ; the background vocals are provided by Laverna Moore, Diane Moore & Pam Miller. Fred Carter Jr. is band leader.

The CMH releases are from 1978-1982.
Joe also played on the following albums :
GRANDPA JONES
CMH 9010 'OLD TIME COUNTRY MUSIC COLLECTION'
CMH 9015 'FAMILY ALBUM'
CMH 9026 'FAMILY GATHERING'
MERLE TRAVIS (with MAC WISEMAN, JACKSON D. KANE & FIDDLIN' RED HERRON)
CMH 9028 'THE CLAYTON McMICHEN STORY'
And he appeared on the following compilations :
CMH 5900 'WORLD'S GREATEST BLUEGRASS'
CMH 5901 'WORLD'S GREATEST BLUEGRASS - Volume 2'
CMH 5902 'THE ORIGINAL BLUEGRASS & COUNTRY SWING SPECTACULAR'
CMH 5903 '
STARS OF BLUEGRASS MUSIC'
CMH 6227 'SUPER PICKER SPECIAL'.
Other compilation albums featuring Joe Maphis are :

MOUNTAIN DEW S7038 '25 Banjo & Guitar Favorites' (Joe does 'Six By Twelve', 'My Little Maggie', 'Banjo Workout' and 'Joe's Breakdown' - Other cuts by Billy Strange, Tommy Tedesco, Roger McGuinn...)

MOUNTAIN DEW S7050 'Instrumental Country Stars' By arrangement with Chart Records
(Joe & Jody Maphis play 'Ride, Ride, Ride' and 'Sippin', Pickin' & Flippin' - Other cuts by Lloyd Green, Hargus Robbins and Del Wood)

EVEREST RECORDS ARCHIVE OF FOLK & JAZZ MUSIC FS-243 'THE GUITAR GREATS'
('Old Joe Clark' by Joe Maphis
who also joins James aka Roger McGuinn on 'Big Sound' - Other cuts by Glen Campbell, Dick Rosmini, Jim Helms...).
